Capsule Library, a reflective project (2020)

Main image by Markus Spiske

This is a year long pilot project. It is a library of reflections collectively curated by the arts community, embodied as a creative capsule and time/sound stamp of our lives during the pandemic. I had been thinking about the way our political, environmental and cultural climates have been moving during this lock down. I thought maybe we could start our own movement of slow and gentle creation in a time when our industry is “hibernating” and to remind ourselves to continue being kind and compassionate.

I will be opening participation globally starting in 2021. Check back for when the main website drops.

This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.

Nothing Else Left to Read (2020- ongoing)

Nothing Else Left to Read (NEL2R) is a digital concert series exploring new online mediums as a basis for live performative frameworks. This series focuses on celebrating emerging artists, new compositions and innovative developments during this digital performance age. NEL2R is an exploratory space for borderless artistic collaboration, featuring composers and musicians from all across the globe while engaging in networks and intersections of visual art, music, technology, popular culture and film.

NEL2R started as a small project resulting from a conversation between Tyler Cunningham, Joyce To and Julie Zhu, who were seeking opportunities that could satisfy artistic creation and satisfaction despite the loss of venues, concerts and live performances during the pandemic. The trio sought ways to alleviate financial burdens by navigating technology to discover ways to reinvent the notion of liveness in performance to audiences and creators everywhere. As a result of the exploration and research of digital performance perspectives, Nothing Else Left To Read was born.

Documentation Reel

Fukushima – In Search of New Light was a project led by Dr. Kumi Kato (Professor, Faculty of Tourism at Wakayama University, Japan). Collaborative improvisatory art performances were catalysts of inquiry into the interconnected relationships between community, environment and tourism in Fukushima, Japan. I was humbled to have spent two weeks performing and engaging in discussion panels and community collaboration with Jan Baker-Finch (eurythmist) and Wago Ryoichi (poet). It was a very special experience learning about Fukushima, meeting its community and finding spaces to respond to the emotions and stories we gathered. Our “concert halls” were sunflower fields, the blacksmith’s, the stone mason’s, Iwaki Art Museum, Iitate Wolf Shrine, a Coastal shrine, a storage ground and in the homes of the people we met.  I have very fond memories of my visit to Iitate and Iwaki in August of 2019, the people I met were some of the most kindest and compassionate.

The Tyalgum Sessions are a collection of live improvised works performed in collaboration with Charulatha Mani. Inspired by the stunning artwork of Jasna Spiranovic; these pieces are 100% made up on the spot – no written notes, no cues, no planning. Just themes, inspirations and reflection. The Tyalgum Sessions are an ongoing residency project in collaboration with artist, Jasna Spiranovic, and musicians of Concept Ensemble.
